Art Berlin 3D and 2D Modular Programme

An initiative of A&M

Introduction

A selective Berlin-based exhibition and professional development programme for artists seeking to strengthen the presentation of their work, engage with Berlin’s contemporary art ecosystem and develop new opportunities over time.

Based from our forthcoming Berlin space in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, the programme combines curated exhibitions, professional support and ongoing programme activity within one of Europe’s most active contemporary art environments. However, access to this ecosystem remains highly competitive and can be difficult to navigate independently.

The Art Berlin Programme provides selected artists with a structured and realistic framework for presenting their work, supported by professional activity before, during and after their exhibition.

While sales are always welcome, the programme’s primary purpose is to strengthen an artist’s professional position within Berlin’s wider art ecosystem. We aim to create meaningful opportunities for work to be seen and discussed by galleries, curators, collectors, architects, designers and other engaged audiences.

Why Berlin?

Berlin offers more than a prestigious place to exhibit. It offers an exceptional concentration of artistic production, professional expertise and international attention within one city.

Approximately one quarter of Germany’s 700 professional galleries are based in Berlin. The city’s galleries employ around half of the country’s gallery workforce and represent approximately 40% of the artists represented by galleries across Germany. Berlin’s wider art market comprises more than 3,400 enterprises, while nearly 30 public and private collections attract specialist audiences from around the world.

What makes this concentration particularly valuable is the possibility of repeated encounters over time. A work may first be seen in an exhibition, considered more closely during a smaller conversation, brought to the attention of another relevant audience and remembered when a future opportunity emerges. Berlin’s strength lies not only in its scale, but in the continual circulation of ideas, artists and professional relationships across the city.

For an artist, the opportunity is therefore not simply to add a Berlin exhibition to their biography. It is to begin developing a more sustained professional position within a city that plays a central role in how contemporary art is produced, discussed, represented, collected and circulated. Further information about Berlin’s art ecosystem and how the programme seeks to engage with it can be provided on request.

Programme Pathways

Artists may participate in one or more programme tracks depending on their objectives, readiness and desired level of engagement.

Artists may begin with whichever pathway is most appropriate to their current circumstances.

Audience Development and Positioning

A&M does not treat audience development as general publicity or simply inviting people to an opening. For each presentation, we identify the professional, collecting and wider audiences most likely to engage meaningfully with the artist’s work, then develop an appropriate combination of targeted communications, personal invitations, smaller gatherings, individual visits and selected approaches.

The purpose is not simply to maximise attendance, but to improve the likelihood that the work is seen, discussed and remembered by people for whom it may have genuine relevance. Where appropriate, we continue promising conversations, provide further information, encourage subsequent engagement and consider how relationships developed through one presentation may connect with the artist’s longer-term positioning and future A&M programme activity.

Further details of the proposed audience development and positioning activity can be provided on request. As 2027 is the programme’s founding year, any figures, activity ranges or numerical targets provided are indicative working estimates rather than guarantees. They may vary according to the artist, the work, the presentation and the selected programme track.

No particular attendance, introduction, sale or opportunity can be guaranteed, but the programme is designed to create a more deliberate and sustained form of engagement than passive footfall, general publicity or a single opening event.

Sculpture and Three-Dimensional Work

Sculpture often requires a different presentation structure from two-dimensional work. Transport, crating and installation can be more demanding, while collectors, architects, designers and commissioners may need additional time to consider scale, placement and acquisition.

For selected sculpture-led practices, Art Berlin by A&M therefore offers adapted founding-year terms combining the wider positioning programme with a longer physical presence in the gallery.

The approximately 40-square-metre main room can normally accommodate up to two principal sculptural positions, depending on the scale, weight, installation requirements, circulation needs and curatorial context of the proposed works. A sculptural position may include one principal work or a small related grouping where space permits.

Sculpture Positions Track

From €495 plus VAT where applicable

The Sculpture Positions Track includes approximately four months of wider engagement, with around six weeks of physical presentation in the gallery. It includes curatorial planning, standard communications, invitation-led programme activity and professional follow-up.

The work may remain in place while the surrounding presentation develops or changes, allowing it to enter more than one curatorial dialogue where appropriate.

Enhanced Sculpture Positions Track

From €795 plus VAT where applicable

The Enhanced Sculpture Positions Track includes approximately seven months of wider engagement, with around eight weeks of physical presentation in the gallery.

It provides additional planning, communications, programme activity, targeted engagement and professional follow-through, including greater scope for approaches to collectors, architects, designers, commissioners and other relevant professional audiences.

The extended physical presence is intended to give the work more time to be encountered, discussed and considered, while also helping to offset the greater transport commitment commonly associated with sculpture.

Sculpture Position Format and Timing

Because the surrounding wall-based exhibition may change during this period, the sculpture can enter more than one curatorial dialogue and be encountered through different programme occasions, invited audiences and professional visits. Its continued presence will always be considered curatorially rather than treated as a work simply remaining in the room.

The space can normally accommodate two or more principal sculptural positions at a time. Final duration, placement and number of works depend on scale, weight, sightlines, visitor circulation, installation requirements, safety and compatibility with the surrounding presentations.

All proposed works are reviewed in advance for scale, condition, installation, safety and suitability for the gallery. Published rates apply to works that can be transported, handled and installed within the gallery’s normal operating arrangements. Large, unusually heavy, fragile, technically complex or specialist-installed works may require a tailored practical and financial agreement.

Small-scale ceramics, glass, multi-object installations, works requiring vitrines, and other specialist object-based presentations are developed separately on a bespoke basis.

Selected high-demand periods may carry a modest timing supplement, which will always be communicated and agreed in advance.

Enhanced Berlin Positions Track Programme

From €895 + VAT

Includes everything within the Berlin Positions Track, together with:

  • Approximately seven months of programme engagement.

  • A minimum of four programme activities is planned, subject to unforeseen circumstances beyond our reasonable control.

  • Extended follow-up and professional support.

Berlin Position Format and Timing

The Berlin positioning tracks are based on tightly curated shared presentations, normally involving three to four artists. Artists confirming at an earlier stage may have greater choice of exhibition periods and more opportunity for the curatorial framework to develop around their existing or intended work. The final work selection may remain flexible until production, communications, transport and installation planning require confirmation. Programme fees apply to standard presentation periods. Selected high-demand periods, including major Berlin art, design or cultural weeks, may carry a modest timing supplement to reflect additional programme and operating requirements. Any such supplement will be clearly communicated and agreed in advance before participation is confirmed.

Extended Positioning Programme

The programme may include:

  • Detailed review.

  • Positioning discussion.

The effectiveness of this stage depends partly on the artist undertaking the agreed work. Approaching relevant contacts before essential improvements have been completed may reduce the value of those approaches.

Typical engagement: approximately three months.

Artists may subsequently be invited into an Exhibition Programme or another A&M initiative where appropriate.

Best suited to: artists seeking sustained guidance, practical implementation support and a focused initial programme of outreach.
